As an island of fisherman, the fishing is plentiful and close to shore. Most of the island’s pangas (flat bottomed fishing boats) are reserved for controlled commercial fishing, but several Holboxeño fisherman supplement their income thanks to guiding privately with several of the tour companies in town. The most bountiful fishing spots are along the underwater cave structure at the northeast shore of the island where the fisherman have their spots mapped out, not by GPS, but rather by a lifetime of experience. Hand-line fishing is the prefect technique here, it is simple, exciting and provides more clues and feedback about what is biting on the other end of the line than any fancy piece of equipment ever could. Expect to catch yellow and red snapper and black grouper along with an occasional mackerel on the gulf side while the bay side provides large sea trout, permit and if your lucky the elusive snook. Most tours last a half-day and include Holbox’s famous ceviche prepared with your catch on the boat by your captain. It is best to arrange through the hotels reception to ensure the quality and service of your special tour.
