Holbox is located within Mexico’s largest ecological reserve, Yum Balam ( or “Lord Jaguar”) which covers more than 380,000 hectares of protected areas. The reserve is a mosaic of ecosystems, from wetlands, barrier islands and reefs, to open ocean, lagoons and rain forests, to the Yucatan’s most important aquifer. Animal life ranges from endangered cat species such as the jaguar, ocelot, and margay, to the whale shark, pink dolphins and giant Manta Rays. There are orchid and butterfly farms and shrines dedicated to 1,000 year-old trees. More than 546 bird species in 74 different families are native to the region and at least 120 known types of birds migrate through the island of Holbox.

The influx of hawksbill turtles, pink flamingos, terns, white pelicans, horseshoe crabs and a wide variety reef fish are some examples of the natural wildlife of this area.
